One of the biggest problems facing the manufacturing industry today is what to do with mixed, contaminated plastics. Some efforts have been made in cleaning and separating mixtures, but land filling contaminated plastics is still the common practice.

Plastic constitutes one of the largest components in the solid waste stream in the United States. Some cities and counties have curbside collection programs, but they only focus on Soda bottles (PET) and milk jugs (HDPE). What happens to the rest (much larger portion) of the plastic waste? The EPA publishes an annual report that characterizes the waste stream entering the nation’s landfills. Plastic is the second largest category of waste and has one of the lowest recycling rates (5.2%).
